The Cytotechnologist is responsible for preparing, examining, and evaluating cellular samples under a microscope to detect abnormalities, including cancer, infections, and other diseases. Working closely with pathologists, the cytotechnologist plays a critical role in early detection and accurate diagnosis.
Prepare and stain cytology specimens using standardized laboratory procedures
Examine gynecologic (e.g., Pap smears) and non-gynecologic (e.g., body fluids, fine needle aspirates) samples
Identify cellular abnormalities and document findings
Refer suspicious or unclear cases to the pathologist for further review
Maintain accurate lab records and comply with all quality assurance and regulatory standards
Operate and maintain laboratory equipment and ensure sample integrity
Adhere to safety, infection control, and confidentiality protocols
Bachelor’s degree in Cytotechnology or related field
Certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent
State licensure (if applicable)
Strong attention to detail and excellent visual acuity
Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) and microscopy techniques
Good communication and critical thinking skills
