The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) performs routine and specialized laboratory testing on patient specimens to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. This role ensures the accuracy and reliability of test results through quality control procedures, instrumentation maintenance, and adherence to laboratory protocols and safety standards.
Perform chemical, hematological, immunologic, microscopic, and bacteriological tests on specimens.
Operate and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment according to manufacturer and regulatory standards.
Collect, label, and process blood and other biological specimens properly.
Review and validate test results for accuracy and consistency before reporting.
Document and report abnormal results promptly to physicians or nursing staff.
Participate in quality control, quality assurance, and proficiency testing programs.
Maintain inventory of laboratory supplies and ensure a clean and safe work environment.
Follow infection control protocols and laboratory safety procedures.
Education: Associate's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology from a NAACLS-accredited program
Certification: ASCP or AMT certification (e.g., MLT(ASCP), MLT(AMT)) preferred or required depending on state/facility
Experience: 0–2 years of clinical lab experience preferred (new grads welcome in many roles)
Proficient in lab equipment operation, specimen handling, and laboratory information systems (LIS)
Strong attention to detail, organizational, and analytical skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
